Fifth Congress MLA quits from Gujarat Assembly; party stares at massive loss in Rajya Sabha polls

Five MLAs from Congress have resigned putting into jeopardy, the grand old party's plans to win two Rajya Sabha seats in the western state.

Ahmedabad: In what could shatter Congress' plans to bag two of four Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat, a fifth MLA from the state has resigned intensifying the crisis in the BJP-ruled state. Pravin Maru from Gadhada, Pradyumansinh Jadeja from Abdasa, Soma Koli Patel from Limbdi, J V Kakadia from Dhari and Mangal Gavit from Dang have resigned, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi said on Monday.
Shortly later, Gujarat Congress suspended the five MLAs, who resigned as legislators, from the primary membership of Indian National Congress (INC).
"Rumours are rife but the party has not received any resignation. MLA Somabhai Patel was in touch with the Congress till yesterday. He might still be in touch with the party. I tried but could not contact JV Kakadia, another legislator... This attempt by the BJP will prove to be disastrous for Gujarat," Gujarat Congress MLA Virjibhai Thummar said on Sunday after four MLAs resigned from the party on Sunday.
The contest in the state became interesting after the BJP fielded three candidates including former Deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin as one of its candidates for the Rajya Sabha.
The Congress, however, said that 'everything is alright'. "Every party has some strategies. It is a part of that," Himmatsinh Patel, an MLA said.
It may be noted that the elections for four Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat will be held on March 26. While the Congress had a strength of 73 MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly, the resignations reduced the number by four on Sunday, prompting the opposition to shift its 24 MLAs to Jaipur. BJP, however, expressed confidence that it will win three seats in Rajya Sabha elections.

How will the equation work in Gujarat-

The BJP has been confident of winning two of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat
For winning the third seat, it will require cross-voting from Congress as it needs a total of 111 votes in the Assembly
Congress, on the other hand, needs 74 votes if it has to win two seats
Resignation by five MLAs puts Congress' plans in jeopardy as it brings the tally to 68, five short of the needed vote count

The barrage of unverified information and remedies have also been amplified by some public figures and organisations with a wide following on social media.
In India, one of the most bizarre ‘treatment’ recommendations have come from the president of Hindu Mahasabha. Swami Chakrapani Maharaj said cow urine and cow dung can be used for treating novel coronavirus disease.
Then a pastor in Pune suggested the application of a 'sacred oil' and said that chanting 'blood of Jesus' 100 times a day can keep coronavirus at bay.
