New Delhi: As the number of positive cases of coronavirus rose to 110 in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, posted a video message on social media, sharing some “simple steps” to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus.
In the nearly seven-minute video clip shared on Instagram, PM Modi can be heard lauding government and health officials for doing everything possible to fight the virus, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization last week after it spread to more than 100 countries.
“Several people are concerned about coronavirus. I believe, in this situation, it is very important for us to be vigilant. Be it Centre, state government, municipality or gram panchayat, everyone is busy taking necessary precautions and monitoring the situation closely,” he said in the video.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of taking precautionary measures instead of panicking over the disease.
Listing some simple preventive measures to avoid the transmission of the virus, PM Modi said: “We should avoid large gatherings, if not urgent. We should also wash our hands several times. We should also change the habit of touching our face, eyes and nose. We need to control this habit as much as we can. We should always touch our face with clean and washed hands.”
“We should also develope the habit of covering our mouth with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing,” he added.

The Prime Minister further said that people who are suspected to be infected with the virus should contact the doctor immediately and heed the advice of experts.
“Those who are infected with the virus are already quarantined and are under close watch, and even those who are suspected to contract the virus after coming in contact with the infected person, should not panic. Wear a mask and immediately visit the nearest hospital for a check-up. This is very important... Such people shoud wear a mask and keep a distance with their family members,” he said urging everyone to maintain personal hygiene.
The Prime Minister also asked people not to pay attention to rumours being spread about the disease. He also reiterated that everyone should avoid handshakes and people greet with namaste.
"Rumours are spreading fast at this time. Some are saying don’t eat this, don’t do this. Some are saying eat this and that to stay away from the virus. I urge all of you to stay away from rumours,” he said, asking citizens to seek only doctors’ advice on the virus.
The total number of novel coronavirus cases in the country increased to 110 on Sunday, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of cases followed by Kerala. So far, two people have died due to the virus in India.
The virus, that first originated in China's Wuhan late last year, has claimed the lives of over 6,000 people and infected more than 1,70,000 others across the globe.
