Wash hands, do not touch face, eyes: PM Modi lists ‘simple steps’ to combat coronavirus in video message

We should also wash our hands several times. We should also change the habit of touching our face, eyes and nose. We should avoid large gatherings, if not urgent: PM said in the video.

KEY HIGHLIGHTs
We should wash our hands several times, said PM Modi in the video
The Prime Minister also asked people not to pay attention to rumours being spread about the disease.
He also reiterated that everyone should avoid handshakes and people greet with namaste

New Delhi: As the number of positive cases of coronavirus rose to 110 in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, posted a video message on social media, sharing some “simple steps” to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus.
In the nearly seven-minute video clip shared on Instagram, PM Modi can be heard lauding government and health officials for doing everything possible to fight the virus, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization last week after it spread to more than 100 countries.
“Several people are concerned about coronavirus. I believe, in this situation, it is very important for us to be vigilant. Be it Centre, state government, municipality or gram panchayat, everyone is busy taking necessary precautions and monitoring the situation closely,” he said in the video.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of taking precautionary measures instead of panicking over the disease.
Listing some simple preventive measures to avoid the transmission of the virus, PM Modi said: “We should avoid large gatherings, if not urgent. We should also wash our hands several times. We should also change the habit of touching our face, eyes and nose. We need to control this habit as much as we can. We should always touch our face with clean and washed hands.”
“We should also develope the habit of covering our mouth with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing,” he added.

The Prime Minister further said that people who are suspected to be infected with the virus should contact the doctor immediately and heed the advice of experts.
“Those who are infected with the virus are already quarantined and are under close watch, and even those who are suspected to contract the virus after coming in contact with the infected person, should not panic. Wear a mask and immediately visit the nearest hospital for a check-up. This is very important... Such people shoud wear a mask and keep a distance with their family members,” he said urging everyone to maintain personal hygiene.
The Prime Minister also asked people not to pay attention to rumours being spread about the disease. He also reiterated that everyone should avoid handshakes and people greet with namaste.
"Rumours are spreading fast at this time. Some are saying don’t eat this, don’t do this. Some are saying eat this and that to stay away from the virus. I urge all of you to stay away from rumours,” he said, asking citizens to seek only doctors’ advice on the virus.
The total number of novel coronavirus cases in the country increased to 110 on Sunday, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of cases followed by Kerala. So far, two people have died due to the virus in India.
The virus, that first originated in China's Wuhan late last year, has claimed the lives of over 6,000 people and infected more than 1,70,000 others across the globe.

Fifth Congress MLA quits from Gujarat Assembly; party stares at massive loss in Rajya Sabha polls

Five MLAs from Congress have resigned putting into jeopardy, the grand old party's plans to win two Rajya Sabha seats in the western state.

Ahmedabad: In what could shatter Congress' plans to bag two of four Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat, a fifth MLA from the state has resigned intensifying the crisis in the BJP-ruled state. Pravin Maru from Gadhada, Pradyumansinh Jadeja from Abdasa, Soma Koli Patel from Limbdi, J V Kakadia from Dhari and Mangal Gavit from Dang have resigned, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi said on Monday.
Shortly later, Gujarat Congress suspended the five MLAs, who resigned as legislators, from the primary membership of Indian National Congress (INC).
"Rumours are rife but the party has not received any resignation. MLA Somabhai Patel was in touch with the Congress till yesterday. He might still be in touch with the party. I tried but could not contact JV Kakadia, another legislator... This attempt by the BJP will prove to be disastrous for Gujarat," Gujarat Congress MLA Virjibhai Thummar said on Sunday after four MLAs resigned from the party on Sunday.
The contest in the state became interesting after the BJP fielded three candidates including former Deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin as one of its candidates for the Rajya Sabha.
The Congress, however, said that 'everything is alright'. "Every party has some strategies. It is a part of that," Himmatsinh Patel, an MLA said.
It may be noted that the elections for four Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat will be held on March 26. While the Congress had a strength of 73 MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly, the resignations reduced the number by four on Sunday, prompting the opposition to shift its 24 MLAs to Jaipur. BJP, however, expressed confidence that it will win three seats in Rajya Sabha elections.

How will the equation work in Gujarat-

The BJP has been confident of winning two of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat
For winning the third seat, it will require cross-voting from Congress as it needs a total of 111 votes in the Assembly
Congress, on the other hand, needs 74 votes if it has to win two seats
Resignation by five MLAs puts Congress' plans in jeopardy as it brings the tally to 68, five short of the needed vote count

Keeping the deluge of fake information in mind, we have compiled a set of COVID-19 myth busters for you.

The deadly coronavirus outbreak has affected over 1,69,562 people and claimed 6,518 lives. As of now, COVID-19 is affecting 157 countries and territories around the world with 1 international conveyance. The most affected country is China, followed by Italy, Iran, Spain, and South Korea.
Currently, there is no cure against the novel coronavirus. As it continues to spread to new regions, people at different locations are taking weird measures and trying out bizarre home remedies to fight the virus. Some of them have no logical explanation whatsoever.
On social media, misinformation on COVID-19 has exploded in the last few weeks. While leading platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTUbe are trying their best to remove misleading content about the virus, fake and unverified information still finds a way to reach millions of netizens. Keeping the deluge of fake information in mind, we have compiled a set of COVID-19 myth busters for you.

The barrage of unverified information and remedies have also been amplified by some public figures and organisations with a wide following on social media.
In India, one of the most bizarre ‘treatment’ recommendations have come from the president of Hindu Mahasabha. Swami Chakrapani Maharaj said cow urine and cow dung can be used for treating novel coronavirus disease.
Then a pastor in Pune suggested the application of a 'sacred oil' and said that chanting 'blood of Jesus' 100 times a day can keep coronavirus at bay.

Sheetala Ashtami 2020: All you need to know about this festival

On Sheetala Ashtami, devotees worship Sheetala Mata, the one who saves people from diseases such as chicken-pox, measles and other heat-borne diseases.

The eighth day in the month of Chaitra (Purnimant calendar) or Phalguna (Amanta calendar), Krishna Paksha is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Sheetala. This festival is also known as Basoda and is celebrated in states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
On this day, devotees worship Sheetala Mata, the one who saves people from diseases such as chicken-pox, measles, and other heat-borne diseases.
The pictorial depiction of the Goddess shows her with either four or two hands. When she is shown having four hands, she holds a broom, a dustpan, neem leaves, and a pitcher. And when she is shown having two hands, she holds a broom in one hand, and a pitcher on the other. Mounted on a donkey, the Mother Goddess blesses her devotees and wards off all kinds of heat-generated illnesses.
Devotees do not light fire on this day to cook, and hence, they consume food prepared on the previous day. Moreover, they prepare a dish made of rice and jaggery or sugarcane juice on Saptami Tithi for the Goddess as Naiveidhya.
How to perform Sheetala Mata Puja?
Rise early, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
Do Dhyana or meditation and invoke Goddess Sheetala.
Seek her blessings and request her to accept your humble prayers and offerings.
Then prepare the thaalis for the puja. Make a lamp with wheat flour dough but do not light it. Make a pack of other offerings such as sindoor, mehendi, haldi, kumkum, akshat, flowers, paan supari, currency coins, coconut with its husk, bananas or any other fruit. Prepare another thaali for the Naivedhya and also fill water in a Kalash.
Hail the Mother Goddess and seek her blessings after offering the Naivedhya.
Perform the aarti to conclude the puja and then distribute the prasad. You may then consume the food prepared on the previous day.
Details of this years Sheelata Ashtami:
Ashtami Tithi began at 3:19 AM on March 16 and shall end at 2:59 AM on March 17.
You can perform the puja any time between 6:29 AM to 06:30 PM today.

4 intelligent ways to minimise banking risks

By maintaining an account with two to three banks, you can distribute your money and reduce your risks emanating from any one bank to some extent

Of late, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a one-month moratorium on Yes Bank after it failed to recover from deteriorating financial health. As a result, the accountholders of the troubled bank are restrained from withdrawing more than Rs 50,000 for now. When a large financial institution gets into trouble, the common people panic about the safety of their money with banks. So, what can you do to ensure the safety of your money and minimise banking risks? Here are a few pointers which you are likely to find very helpful.
(1) Choose your bank wisely
There are so many banks in India, but are all banks the same? What differentiates one bank from another? Why you should open or not open an account in a particular bank? If you ask these questions before opening a bank account, it can help you to make a wise decision while selecting the bank. We’ll get into the finer details of how to evaluate banks below.
(2) Have relationships with multiple banks
Diversification not only works when you invest money but it can also help you reduce banking risks. By maintaining an account with two to three banks, you can distribute your money and reduce your risks emanating from any one bank to some extent. However, don't open accounts in too many banks because it would require you to maintain a minimum balance in each account, and you’ll also need to pay account charges such as annual debit card charges. If you fail to operate them regularly, your account may become dormant. Also, having too many accounts makes it difficult to keep track of the statements, charges, transactions, passwords, etc.
(3) When in doubt about a bank, limit your deposits to Rs 5 lakh
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Budget 2020 speech that the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), an RBI subsidiary, will increase its insurance cover of bank deposits to Rs 5 lakh per bank per customer in case the bank fails. This insurance cover includes deposit amount and interest thereof. Meaning, suppose you have an FD of Rs. 5 lakh and the interest on it is Rs 25,000, the maximum insurance cover would be Rs 5 lakh on the bank's default and you may lose Rs 25,000 in interest earnings. So, if you are not sure about your bank’s financial health, you’ll be well-advised not to deposit more than Rs 5 lakh with it. If you want to deposit more than Rs 5 lakh, you can distribute your fund in two to three banks.
(4) Regularly check the financial health of your bank
Now, this could be a slightly difficult task for the common people, but evaluating one’s bank on a few critical parameters has become necessary, and could help avoid troubles later.
Agencies like Moody’s, ICRA, etc. regularly update the credit rating of different banks and financial institutions. If you monitor the credit ratings of your banks and spot a consistent fall, you might not want to increase your fund exposure in them or, if required, change the bank.
Similarly, you can check the balance-sheets of your banks which are in the public domain and see their NPA ratios. A high NPA ratio is another red flag. The share price of banks is another parameter to check their health. A bank’s share price will fall when its business doesn’t perform as per expectations of profitability, NPAs, corporate governance, and other parameters.  Therefore, a falling share price should give you cause for concern.
Final thoughts
The RBI governs all commercial banks in the country. Whenever there has been a crisis, the central bank has always played a proactive role in protecting the accountholders and ensuring they do not lose their hard-earned money. So, the RBI is a crucial layer of protection, whereas the steps mentioned above can provide you with an extra cushion against banking risks.

Sarcasm Dilli ka Maalik
